REVIEW for To Catch a Prince

Thank you to the wonderful people at Simon & Schuster for sending me a copy of this book.

TITLE:          To Catch a Prince

AUTHOR:     Gillian McKnight

GENRE:         YA

RATING:       2.5 Stars

I had never heard of this series before so I was thrilled to find a new author (for me) who writes YA chick lit.

Actually, this series has been around for a bit, but this edition incorporates two novels - including the Frog Prince.

Alexis and Helene are heading out to London and they are excited.  They do everything together and are not only stepsisters, but best friends.  As they are heading for London, they come up with a bet - one of them must end up "meeting" and "catching"  Prince William.

Okay, first I have to say that this particular storyline felt a little "pushing the envelope of reality" a tiny bit.  Nonetheless, I thought it might be fun to read, especially with all the hoopla surrounding the Royal Wedding that is coming up shortly.

I thought the novel was fair - I think the main problem I had with it is that it is soooooo slow.  I am not one for reading passages that include way too many details and this book (and this writing) was guilty of this offense!  Wow!  one passage could go on for pages and pages and frankly, I found myself losing interest.

When the girls were actually involved in some kind of activity, my interest would pick up, but once these passages were over, it was back to detail after painful detail.

My other issue with this book is that it is kind of silly and improbable. I read chick lit, a lot of it, so I am quite use to suspending my disbelief.  I am, therefore, not all that picky about the probability of an event truly happening, but To Catch a Prince pushed it way too far at times.

Yeah, as you can see, this one was not one that I would recommend.

REVIEW for Skinny

Thank you, thank you to the wonderful people at HarperCollins Canada for sending me a copy of this book to read and review.

TITLE:           Skinny

AUTHOR:      Diana Spechler

GENRE:         Novel

RATING:       3 Stars

Anyone who is a regular reader of my blog knows that I am intimately aware with anything that has to do with body image and eating isues.  This is why I jumped on the opportunity of reviewing the book Skinny.

Its going to be hard for me to review this book - why?  Because although I love the subject matter and most of the basic plotline of the book, I have to be totally honest in saying that I just could not get immersed into the story.

I think part of the reason, for me, is the writing style.  I have to admit that I am a lover of chick lit and the breezy style that comes along with that.   However, I can also read a straight up and serious type of book - as long as the writing is engaging.  Unfortunately, for me, Skinny did not fit either category. The writing on  Skinny felt a little too grandiose for the storyline it was trying to carry.  Even the passages that were destined to be funny or "tongue in cheek" were written in a way that felt too stiff and structured for my personal taste.

As I read this book, I kept thinking how this would be perfect for readers who love to read contemporary fiction with a literary twist to the writing.  I think this book would be perfect for those who enjoyed "She's come Undone" another novel about weight and body image that many people loved and I did not really enjoy.

Having said all of this, I have to mention that the author does an extremely good job of expressing body image issues and what is really going through many of our minds when it comes to food/body and the love/hate relationship we have.

Overall, this book was okay, but probably just not my cup of tea.

Visiting Burlington, Vermont

I decided to spend the weekend in Burlington, Vermont. This is a beautiful area of the USA that I try to visit at least twice a year :)  While it is not New York and BEA, it IS the US and I am always happy when I cross the border whether I am alone or travelling with someone :)

I decided to shake it up a little this time by switching hotels.  I found a great hotel rate on Expedia.ca and booked the Hilton in Burlington.  I figured hey! a well known chain - I am bound to be treated well - right?

First, I discovered that they moved the Greyound bus terminal - which I did NOT know. Instead of leaving it downtown, they moved it to the airport. I chose the Hilton, in part, because of its proximity to the terminal, but this point became completely useless as the airport is actually closer to the hotel I normally stay at. Anyway, I ended up taking a $20.00 taxi ride (the meter starts at $8.50!!!!!) for a less than 10 minute ride. Of course, upon my arrival at the hotel, the Hilton clerk told me "we have a free shuttle you know" - darn!

I got a beautiful room - with a Lake Champlain view. This lake is glorious and I was thrilled.  This is the view from my room

I walked around Burlington (trust me, this is not an easy thing as this town is built on a hill!).  I, of course, made a beeline for the Borders bookstore as well as Barnes and Nobles.   A word about bookstores - I use to spend hours and hours in these stores.  Now, in about 1 hour, I had done the rounds. I had a list of 30 books (recent releases) that I was looking for and ended up finding only 1.  I talked with one of the clerks at the Borders and asked her why none of these new releases where in store and she told me that Borders and Barnes and Nobles are trying to carry less books and more "stuff" in their stores, especially since so many people are now ordering online and using ebooks. Of course, she also stated that shipping through their online store is so much cheaper.

I was NOT happy to hear this as when I want a book - i want it NOW!!! and don't even get me started on ebooks.  So, I left both stores with only a few books and I was not very happy as I rely on these visits to get books that I know I won't find in Chapters in Montreal - which is a pretty crappy bookstore at the best of times.

As I walked I went into the Fletcher Library (also a favorite spot of mine) and headed for their "free books" section - where I found a brand new Yoga magazine (May 2011) which someone had donated for the feebie bin.  This made my trip to the library worth it.  This building is odd.  Its a beautiful old winged building with a really hideous add on - see for yourself.

I then headed for two of my favorite haunts.  The Dobra Tea house - which is an ecclectic and zen tea shop and serves the Indian tea - Masala that I love.  I also went to Muddy Waters - one of the most ecclectic coffee shops in the area, it is always busy and full of college students and I love the place.  There are tons of coffee shops in Burlington, but I always choose this one (this is a picture of the entrance).

Of course, Burlington is also known for being the home of Ben & Jerry's ice cream, so I took a picture of the storefront.  I have never actually tasted the ice cream (too much sugar and fat for me) but I hear it is amazing.  I also took a picture of  Church street, which is the main cobblestone shopping area.

Needless to say, I was exhausted after my day.  So, I went back to the hotel to discover that the heater in my room was out of sorts. It was either too cold, too warm or too noisy (I felt like the three bears).  The manager changed my room and I ended up on the 6th floor which was okay. until I was awakened at 2:30 a.m. by the couple next door -having sex - loudly.  I have to say that my second room had a connecting door (unlike the first room) and the noise was mainly coming from there - but boy was she loud and getting louder. After pulling the pillow over my head ( by the way, this does not work) and patiently saying to myself "how long can this take?" i ended up calling the front desk who was to send security - which they never did. Of course, this meant that it went on and on and then, when it was finally over, they put the TV on full blast. I was not happy.

Of course, the next morning (I am a morning person) I was up at 6:30 and put the TV on as loud as I could - but when I left the hotel at 9:00 a.m. there was not a peep coming out of their room. I almost banged on their door until I woke them up, but thought I should probably take the high road on this one :)  What a night!  Its funny because this stuff never happens to me when I stay at the cheaper chain hotels - go figure.

Oh, I almost forgot to mention one of the main reasons I chose this weekend to go to the USA. I wanted to see the TVLAND Awards (we can't get them here).  They were honoring some of my favorite shows: Facts of Life, Family Ties and Welcome Back Kotter and I was dying to see what they all looked like now.  They were also honoring The Cosby Show, but I never liked that one.

The only problem? (can you see a pattern here?)  the hotel does not have TVLAND on their tv channels!!! Until - I discovered that I could get that station on the little tvs that are mounted on the treadmills in their fitness center (read:  small area with a few treadmills and a bike).  So, I actually spent 2 hours walking on the treadmill, with my ear plugs on watching TVLAND Awards on Sunday night.  I am sure the other guests must have been wondering why I was walking on the treadmill like a demon for the first 30 minutes (my real work out) and then kind of strolling along for the next 90 minutes!  But it was so fun to see all the casts back together again and to those who will email me that I could have seen it on YouTube - yeah! i know, but it was fun to watch the entire show even if I had to do it from a treadmill.

Having said all of this, I have to mention that the hotel manager was very nice and removed all of my breakfast charges to compensate me ($50.00 worth) and I do have to mention that this hotel is so clean and offers a beautiful view  if you can get it minus the sound effects.

Random thoughts on the US (these are things that popped into my head as I was walking around):
  • Why didn't I bring my hat?  (It was so cold - and they were also getting some of the winds - courtesy of the tornadoes other states had experienced);
  • How on earth do Americans stay healthy?  Every piece of food I was served was covered with breading, sauces, cheese or something equally fattening.  I found a Ponderosa steakhouse (we use to have here ages ago) and was thrilled until I saw their buffet.  Chicken wings, mac&cheese, stuffed pizza and a huge variety of mayonnaise filled salads??????
  • Why doesn't anyone in Burlington know where the bus stops are?  I don't like to drive so I take public transportation when I travel most of the times. Its a great way to discover the areas you are in.  However, Burlington has a weird habit of putting bus stops here and there with no actual reason behind it.  As I found myself in a completely foreign area, I tried to locate the bus stops and could not find any - asked about 10 people who live in the area and not one person knew where to find them either. How is that possible?  I had a similar problem in New York City - where Cindy and I were looking for a subway - any subway and had to ask the street vendor - who seemed to be the only one who could answer us.  Doesn't anyone in the US take public transportation?  I guess that living in Montreal has spoiled me. Here, you can pretty well ask anyone and they can tell you where the metro is or the bus line - at the very least they can point you in the general area.
  • Why are there so many cars in this tiny state (I guess this goes hand and hand with the previous comment)
  • How do people find work around here? there is no industry to speak of - not really.
  • How can I move here?   Its such a beautiful place.
I guess that's it for my trip.  I came home with a few books, but nothing exciting.  I did have a great time though!

REVIEW for Between a Rock and a Hot Place

Thank you to the wonderful people at HarperCollins Canada for sending me this book.

TITLE:           Between a Rock and a Hot Place

AUTHOR:     Tracey Jackson

GENRE:         Novel

RATING:       4 Stars

I am getting closer and closer to 50, which is, of course, one of the reasons I found myself gravitating to this book. What freaks me out is that it seems as though 50 is coming so quickly - I could swear I was only 30 yesterday!

Having said that, I feel the need to find humour in getting older and I found it, in spades, in this book. Jackson manages to write a book that made me smile at the prospect of being 50 and more! She has a great way of putting things in perspective and even manages to deal with difficult and touchy subjects such as hormone therapy and IBS - it takes some kind of writing to actually make these interesting subjects that I actually want to read about.

I think this book should be read by all women - those nearing 50 or over and those in their 30's - because you will not believe how quickly the years pass, but at least, you can get a chuckle and a laugh out of it, thanks to Between a Rock and a Hot Place.

REVIEW for Writing Yoga

Thank you to Rodmell Press for so kindly sending me a copy of this wonderful book.

TITLE:             Writing Yoga, A Guide to Keeping a Practice Journal

AUTHOR:        Bruce Black

GENRE:           Spirituality

RATING:         4 Stars

Writing Yoga incorporates two of my favorite activites - yoga and journal writing. Unfortunately, I often fall short when it comes to incorporating both activities as one or the other usually falls by the wayside.

Having said that however, I have felt totally inspired, not to mention enthused, about some of the suggestions that I read in Writing Yoga - which makes me excited about the entire process.

I particularly love the exerpts "from my journal", which makes me feel as though I am getting a secret glimpse into the author's life and his own practice.

My favorite chapter is "Trusting the Process" which I found myself rereading 3 times.

Very well written for both yogis and beginners alike, this book is loaded with great ideas, but is also a fun read, making yoga interesting and very challenging.

I am keeping this book as a reference guide which I know I will be using over and over again.

I AM SO SAD

I have been lucky enough to be working, on a contract basis, for the last 8 months.  Actually, this was a 2 month contract that they kept extending - however, today was my last day and I am really sad.

I have been in the work forece for alot of years and I have worked with all kinds of people. However, the group of people I just finished working with were THE BEST I have ever worked with. This group is actually the human resources department of a large electronics company - that is well known world wide, specializing in supplying cockpit equipment.  There are 900 people working at this plant and we were 16 people - all part of the HR department.  Each and every person there was wonderful, professional and a joy to work with and it all had to end today :(

Yummy cake and a beautiful pen

Yesterday, they all took me out to my favorite restaurant East Side Marios.  The entire team was there (except for one person who had a stomach flu).  I was given a beautiful pen with the company name on it.  I was very touched that the whole team came out to say goodbye.

This morning, one of my favorite people in the office (Lynda)came in with a beautiful bouquet of flowers and she and another wonderful and kind person (Caroline) gave me a touching goodbye card and a Starbucks card - I guess I kind of talked about my love for all things Starbucks quite a few times in the 8 months I was there - especially since there was no Starbucks close to the plant AND the cafeteria coffee was really bad.

Because there are 900 employees at the plant, we offer a full cafeteria service and the Chef had promised to put on the menu, for my last day, my favorite meal - a soup meal which consists of noodles, tofu and beef.  He kept his promise and it was served today for lunch!  Tracy the person who works the cash at the cafeteria, who treated me like her daughter (despite the fact that she is my age) refused to take my money and paid for my lunch.

I was also touched by the goodbye hugs and kind words that I received.  I am so blessed - but boy is it hard to say goodbye to these wonderful people.

I just wanted to share some photos :)

REVIEW for Ask Amy Green Summer Secrets

Thank you Random House Canada for sending me this book.

TITLE:              Ask Amy Green Summer Secrets

AUTHOR:         Sarah Webb

GENRE:            YA

RATING:          3 Stars

This is the second book in the series and as I had read the first one, I was curious to read this second installment.

The premise of the books are cute and fun.  Amy - a very typical teen, finds herself in a blended family with lots of people surrounding her.  She has found "her true love???" and has somehow become a lifeline of advice to others.

As I am typing this, I realize that the main problem I had with this book is that there is, indeed, too much going on at the same time.  It feels as though the author is trying to make her storyline (and her main character) too ecclectic - especially when she literally surrounds her with so many people who basically have their own (weird and at times funny) storylines of their own.

I kept trying to keep the main thread going - that of Amy and Seth trying to be together, but everything else in the storyline just kept getting in the way.

This was not a horrible read, just not as much fun as I would have hoped - although I still do enjoy Amy and her very particular way of thinking and dealing with situations.

REVIEW for Lipstick Laws

Thank you! thank you to the wonderful people at Houghton Mifflin Harcourt for sending me this book (I had been dying to read it).

TITLE:                  Lipstick Laws

AUTHOR:            Amy Holder

GENRE:                YA

RATING:              5 Stars

I had been anxiously awaiting this book and was really looking forward to reading Lipstick Laws. This, for me, is often a problem as I find myself building up my expectations, only to be disappointed in the end.

Fortunately, in this case, the fears were not warranted in the least. While Lipstick Laws may not be high literature, it is an absolutely engaging, enchanting and entertaining ‘chick lit’ read that I simply adored – so much so – that I am rating it a coveted 5 stars, which is something I don’t often give out.

I am a huge fan of chick lit and I love YA chick lit. In Lipstick Laws, we find all the pre requisite that, to me, indicates that I am about to embark on a great, great read.

Firstly, the setting is high school which you just know is a ripe environment for the cattiness and disaccord that can only exist between teenager girls. Secondly, ‘Brit’ is the perfect spoiled, horrible brat. In fact, author Holder has created a somewhat ‘over the top’ character that is a lot of fun to hate (and to follow). Brit is a huge part of the storyline and I simply loved just how totally evil and completely devoid of niceness she truly was.

Of course, we have our main character April who has issues of her own – mainly that she is addicted to stuffing her bra with tissue. April also finds herself as part of Brit’s exclusive entourage and is asked to sign the Lipstick Laws – a series of ridiculous laws, as determined by Brit, in order to ensure that Brit’s little ‘clique’ stay faithful to her.

While April reluctantly signs the document, you can already feel the direction this book is going to take and this is where things get crazy and entertaining. Fortunately, Holder takes the book in a bit of a different direction than you might expect, although I have to admit that at times, I felt as though I had read parts of this story before, through other authors.

However, it is a testament to how much I enjoyed both the writing and the storyline that I did not mind this at all. The story just flows and I found myself completely involved, at times rooting for April and her gang and at times, reading in a mad rush to find out more.

If I have a criticism of this book is that April was a bit of a weakling and while I realize that this is a fundamental part of the storyline, it felt a bit much at times – especially the ‘pool’ segment where April is worried that her tissue filled bikini top might get wet. At times, I felt that April was simply too silly for words.

Having said that, however, I have to say that I am hoping for a part 2 of this book or, at the very least, another 10 books by this author. Loved, loved Lipstick Laws.

REVIEW for Watch Me Do Yoga

Thank you to the very kind people at Rodmell Press for sending me this book.

TITLE:                     Watch me Do Yoga

AUTHOR:                Bobby Clennell

GENRE:                   Children

RATING:                 5 Stars

Watch me Do Yoga is absolutely wonderful. Actually, that should be my entire review because it does describe the book perfectly.

I discovered yoga in my 40's.....and I have often wondered how beneficial yoga would have been for my as a child (both from a physical AND mental point of view).

This is one of the reasons I think this book is so important, not to mention timely.

It is definitely children friendly - with great color illustrations of the basic poses. Very well define and easy to follow, this book is both a joy to watch/read and use as a practice tool for any child who is curious and interested in yoga.

Now - parents and child can practice their poses together in a safe and serene environment.

I loved, loved this book.
