REVIEW for A Surrey State of Affairs

Thank you to the publisher for sending me a copy of this great book.

TITLE:               A Surrey State of Affairs

AUTHOR:          Ceri Radford

GENRE:             Fiction

RATING:

I wasn’t quite sure what to expect with this book, but I thought the storyline sounded amusing and light so I decided to take a chance.

Although the book features quite a chorus of characters, each with their own particular quirks, it is obvious that this  is Constance’s story – as told by her through her blog entries.  I loved this plot twist as I have to admit that I do like the diary and blog entry format. Quick, succinct, usually done with humor (and sometimes with sadness) but always informative.  I guess I love this format so much because it always makes me feel as though I am on the inside getting the scoops (and I love a great scoop).

I have to admit that it truly took me a while (longer than I had hoped) to like Constance.  She appears to be somewhat overbearing, snobby out of touch and meddlesome and while I say ‘somewhat’ she is actually more than somewhat annoying at times.  However, the beauty of this book is that by reading the entries, you discover a whole new side to Constance, one that she hides much to the world.  While Constance is not quite clear on what blogging is or how it goes out in the world, she does ‘take’ to it and turns out some hilarious entries.
One of the strongest parts of this book is the humor and some parts were extremely funny. Constance has a way of describing a person or an incident that I loved, all the while trying to be helpful.  However, the big surprise for me, in this one was that underneath all this humor Constance actually does some growing (and some good for others).

This book is a great read that I am extremely happy I discovered.

I like the blog/diary format in a book too, so this sounds good to me.
