GENRE: Thriller
Smoky Barrett is still with the FBI and although she has been through hell, both emotionally and physically, she is determined to continue to fight the evil that is out there.
However, many things are new in Smoky's life - including the fact that she is now responsible for her own adoptive child - who refuses to speak because of the horrors she has experienced. Together, they will try to make it through life with as much love and faith as possible.
However, fate will once again come and challenge Smoky. She is called to a gruesome murder scene where a survivor by the name of Sarah who has a gun to her temple - Sarah insists on speaking only to Smoky.
Once Smoky gets a chance to speak to Sarah she finds out that Sarah's background has a bizarre twist that is directly related to the murder she is involved in. With the help of Sarah's diary, she finds out that Sarah was involved in another murder at the age of 6 and that she spent her life in and out of foster homes - this touches Smoky deeply and she is determined to save Sarah from a madman.
McFadyen writes with flair and he knows how to grab you. I felt lulled by the beginning of the book - only to be sucked into the murders that will soon follow. There are some extremely graphic descriptions of the murders and the condition of the bodies - which, at times, were difficult to read - however, the story is so gripping that I felt the need to continue on reading - I needed to know how this was going to end.
I like Smoky as the heroine - but felt as though her newly found role as 'mom' slowed the storyline in some instances.
This is a great read - I always wanted to get to the next page to see what happens next. Buy this one.
