REVIEW for The Snowball Effect

A huge thank you goes out to the amazong Melissa at HarperCollins Canada for being, once again, so kind in sending me this book!

TITLE: The Snowball Effect

AUTHOR: Holly Nicole Hoxter

GENRE: YA

RATING: 5 Stars

It has occured to me lately just how high the quality of YA novels can actually be. I have been lucky enough to have come across some of the most moving, well written and touching YA novels in the last few months and the Snowball Effect rates right up there - as you can see by my 5 STAR RATING - which is, incredibly rare for me.

The Snowball Effect tackles a few extremely tough subjects at the same time - suicide, depression, reconstructed families and dysfunctional ones! This easily could have gotten itself drawn into either a ridiculously depressing and boring read, or become one of those "someone will come in and save everyone at the eleventh hour" - both of which would have been horrible. Instead, author Holly Nicole Hoxter has creafted a book that is the perfect, perfect mixture of sadness and hope intermingled with everyday circumstances and characters that alternatively struggle, overcome, learn through hard life lessons, despise, love and hate. In other words - this book is about real life and on how tough it can be.

Perfectly written for the YA audience - this book also works as a message of hope - and while the author shows all sides of life, there is always that little gleam of "you can get through this". I loved, loved it.

Oh wow, a 5 star rating!!! I am looking for a few good shorter (maybe YA) books for the read-a-thon in April. I wish you had like a list of your books on the side for easy access, LOL. You always have such good books posted on here. I guess I will just have to take a few min. (hrs.) and go through your old posts to look for book ideas.

I do! If you look towards the right hand (lower part of the blog - so scroll down to "My 2009 Challenges" you will find a list of all the chick lit and YA books I read in 2009.

As for YA I have read in 2010, you can look at my 2010 "chick lit challenge" and my "new authors challenge" they are both covering YA only. Hope this helps!! Enjoy the challenge.

Based on the cover alone (which is wrong of me to do, but oh well...) I wouldn't pick up this book, but 5 stars? I need to write a note of this somewhere... =)
