Thank you to the wonderful publicists at Scholastic Canada for sending me this book.

TITLE:       Choke

AUTHOR:       Diana Lopez

GENRE:          YA

I wasn’t quite sure what to expect when I started reading Choke, but I knew that this book was not going to be light and airy and, of course, I was right.

What a subject matter and I can’t believe that young adults have to deal with this kind of thing, except that it appears that they do.

Windy wants to fit in.  She has had to deal with the mean girls before (somehow I don’t remember there being a bunch of girls like this when I was in high school, yet now, there seems to be a clique in every school) and does not want to keep dealing with it.

Fortunately, her troubles seem to behind her as she meets Nina who is beyond anything Windy could ever hope to be – so, of course, Nina becomes ‘the’ person to impress.  In fact, pretty much anything Nina thinks does or says is just fine with Windy and this is where it gets very tricky.

Nina is into this choking game – which is dangerous and forbidden and Windy finds herself torn between her conscience and her need/desire to fit in.

What follows is an extremely difficult but realistic read on the subject of acceptance, fitting in and dealing with what you believe to be right.

This book is engrossing because it is so realistic.  I could actually imagine the scenes just as they were described.  I could feel Windy’s pain and fear and her constant state of confusion.

I am constantly amazed at how difficult it can be to be popular now and to just what lengths young adults will go to in order to fit in.  Its not bad enough that many have to contend with bullying, now they also have to worry about this!

This book is shocking but I believe is a necessary read for anyone with a teenager child.

Unfortunately there do seem to be mean girls at every school these days. I think some mothers encourage it and technology has made it worse. I'm glad to see the book is good - I picked it up at BEA.
