REVIEW for The Beast

Thank you to Edelweiss for sending me an e-galley of this book.

TITLE:              The Beast

AUTHOR:        Faye Kellerman

GENRE:          Thriller

RATING:

I loved this book - Kellerman has written a wonderfully thrilling book which left me feverishly turning my Kindle 'pages'.

The premise of the book is completely crazy and far fetched, but it works, which is a testament to this author's ability to write a story. I loved the fact that I did not know what was going to happen next - and the story was nice and creepy, especially in the very beginning when the police are called into one of the weirdest crime scenes they have ever witnessed.

Kellerman wrote the first few chapters very well - completely captivating me and making me shiver at the same time. Fortunately, Kellerman has also been listening to many of us who have commented, in the past, about the role Rina should play in her novels. Let's face it, this is about Peter Decker, his team and solving crimes and, in the past, Rina has been a pain - somewhat taking up too much space within the storyline. However, in The Beast, she is a secondary character - which is where she should stay.

Additionally, Kellerman has also, over the course of her last few books, been toning down the strong religious overtones. I have no problem with a book being highly religious, but for me, there simply is no place for it if you are reading a thriller (unless it is tied into the murders). While there is some mention of religion - it is kept to a minimum and actually works with the storyline.

Finally, the Gabe love connection does not work for me at all. While Gabe is okay, his constant whining about his 16 year old 'girlfriend' gets old very quickly and adds absolutely nothing to the storyline at all. I think this relationship needs to go.

I would also like to see more of Chris. I know he was a character in a previous book, but I think he is fun and would add alot of spice to an upcoming story.

Overall, I loved, loved this one.
